Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the S.R. of Viet Nam
H.E. Bùi Thanh Sơn is a career diplomat with more than 30 years of experience in international relations, foreign policy planning, international economics and international negotiations.
He was born in 1962, married with one daughter. His hometown is Hanoi.
EDUCATION
He graduated from the University of Diplomacy (now the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam) in 1984 and obtained a Master degree in International Affairs at Columbia University (USA) in 1993.
He speaks English and Japanese.
CAREER
HE Bùi Thanh Sơn began his diplomatic career in September 1987 as a research fellow at the Institute for International Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam (MOFA). From June 1993 to March 1996, he worked at the Institute in different capacities including as the Head of Europe – America Department and Chief of Office. Between March 1996 and February 2000, he held the position of Deputy Director of the Institute.
From March 2000 to July 2003, he was Minister Counselor at the Embassy of Viet Nam to the Republic of Singapore, before returning to MOFA to serve as Deputy Director, then Director General of the Foreign Policy Planning Department until September 2008.
Between September 2008 to November 2009, he acted as Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director General of Foreign Policy Planning Department. He was Viet Nam’s Chief Negotiator (2008 – 2012) of the Viet Nam - EU Partnership and Comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA).
In November 2009, he was appointed Vice Minister and from July 2016 served as First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs.
H.E. Bui Thanh Sơn is a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam since January 2016 and a deputy of the National Assembly since June 2016.
He was first appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs by the 14th National Assembly on April 8, 2021, and re-appointed by the 15thNational Assemblyon July 28, 2021.
On August 26, 2024, he as appointed Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
