Vietnam – Colombia Relations
Vietnam and Colombia established diplomatic relations at ambassador level in January 1979. The Ambassador of Vietnam to Cuba is concurrently Ambassador to Colombia while the Colombian Ambassador to Malaysia is concurrently Ambassador to Vietnam.
In October 1995, President Le Duc Anh took part in the 10th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Bogota and had a bilateral meeting with the Colombian President. In September 2006, the Foreign Ministers of two countries met on the sidelines of the 14th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Cuba. They reaffirmed both sides’ willingness to further promote relations, encourage exchange of visits between the two countries, particularly business delegations. Colombia was one of many countries in Latin America which early announced their support for Vietnam’s accession to WTO without any request for bilateral negotiations, and Vietnam’s candidacy for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council in 2008-2009.
The bilateral trade, though insignificant in volume, about USD 22 million in 2006, has shown great potential in energy, agriculture, biotechnology and consumer goods industry (electric and electronic products).
