Vietnam - Cuba Relations


Since the establishment of diplomatic relations (December 2nd, 1960), in spite of the ups and downs that happen around the world, the relationship between Vietnam and Cuba has been maintained and developed, reflecting the sincere feelings, the faithful and consistent positions of the two Parties, Governments and Peoples towards the Revolutionary process taking place in each country. Cuba has always been in the vanguard of the popular movements that supported Vietnam's struggle for independence and freedom as well as for national building. Cuba attaches great importance to improving the multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam, especially in the fields that Cuba has great potentials such as construction, transport, biotechnology, education-training, healthcare, sports and agriculture...

- Exchange of delegations: Many high-ranking delegations have been exchanged between the two countries. Vietnamese leaders visiting Cuba include Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet (June, 1993), President Le Duc Anh (September, 1995), General Secretary Le Kha Phieu (July, 1999), President Tran Duc Luong (April, 2000 and November, 2004), Vice Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung (December, 2001), Prime Minister Phan Van Khai (October, 2002), National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An (August, 2003 and March, 2006), General Secretary Nong Duc Manh (March, 2004 and June, 2007), President Nguyen Minh Triet's meeting with Cuban leaders on the occasion of the 14th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Havana (September, 2006); and the visits to Vietnam are as following: President Fidel Castro (December, 1995 and February, 2003), Minister of Foreign Affairs Robaina (March, 1999), Vice President of the Council of State Carlos Lage (December, 1999), Minister of Foreign Affairs Felipe Perez Roque (February, 2001 and April, 2007), Vice President Raul Castro (April, 2005),  President of the Cuba's National Assembly of the People's Power Ricardo Alarcon (June, 2007) and other delegations at politburo and ministerial levels... The leaders agree to strongly enhance the friendship, solidarity and close cooperation in commensurate with the potentials of each country.

- The bilateral trade turnover: the two countries are witnessing a considerable trade growth (in 2001, the two way volume totaled 45.6 million USD; in 2002, it reached 48 million USD; in 2003: around 90 million USD; in 2004: 119 million USD; in 2005: 247 million USD, and in 2006: around 300 million USD). Vietnam exports to Cuba rice, coal, electronic and domestic equipment, electric fans, light bulbs, garment and footwear. Vietnam imports from Cuba pharmaceutical products and raw materials that worth approximately 2 millions USD. Both sides maintain regular meetings of the joint Intergovernmental Committee that takes place alternatively in Vietnam and Cuba.

- Concerning science and technology: both sides have implemented many cooperation programs and projects, intensifying exchange of experts on agriculture, cattle raising, construction, biotechnology, pharmaceutical as well as fisheries, petroleum, finance, television and sports...

 - Concerning culture and education: Cuba has been of great help in the field of education and training around 2,000 officials in different fields. The Vietnamese side also helps Cuba educate a number of students in the Vietnamese language and at different specific fields. In 2007 Vietnam started offering Cuba 10 scholarships to study the language, culture and other subjects./.
