Vietnam - Sierra Leone Relations


Vietnam and Sierra Leone established diplomatic relations on June 24, 1982. The two countries have enjoyed good political ties and supported each other at international forums such as NAM and the United Nations.

Mr. E. Johny, Sierra Leone’s Counselor visited Vietnam in December 2001 to boost bilateral relations. The two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Agricultural Co-operation and Salt Production. A delegation led by Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Beijing attended the Vietnam-Africa International Symposium held in Hanoi from May 28-30, 2005; the two sides signed an Agreement on Economic, Commercial, Cultural, Scientific and Technological Co-operation.

Sierra Leone is in need of Vietnam’s education experts for teaching at universities and schools in Sierra Leone; and agricultural experts and technicians for experiences in rice, soybean and fruit cultivation and training of Sierra Leone’s farmers. Sierra Leone is willing to reserve from 300,000 to 1 million hectares of land for rice cultivation co-operation. The country has suggested Vietnam invest in building a cannery factory in Sierra Leone. In addition, Sierra Leone wanted to import small tool machines: nail-making machine; pumping machine and brick production line. The country is willing to act as a salt saleagent for Vietnam in West Africa.

The Vietnamese Ambassador to Morocco is concurrently accredited to Sierra Leone.

The Sierra Leone Ambassdor to China is concurrently accredited to Vietnam.
