Vietnam and Kuwait establised diplomatic relations on  01 January 1976. Kuwait opened its Embassy in Hanoi in February 1997.

Vietnam inaugurated its trade office in June 1993 and opened its Embassy in Kuwait in October 2003.

The opening of Kuwaiti Embassy in Hanoi and General Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City is currently in progress.

So far, through Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED), more than 100 million US dollars has been lent to Vietnam with low interests for rural infrastructure projects (irrigation works and rural roads).

The two countries are negotiating some agreements on cooperation in the following fields: agriculture, tourist, civil aviation, physical-sport training, culture and avoidance of double taxation.

Vietnam’s exports to Kuwait include garment and textile products, seafoods, hardwoods, computer and electronic appliances, vegetables, pepper, footwear and china ware. It imports DO oil, urine fertiliser, plastic material, textile, chemical products, and leather material and accessories.

- MOU on cooperation between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs (June 2005);
- Protocol on the establishment of the Joint Committee for Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation between the Kuwaiti Government and Vietnamese Government; Agreement on Investment Promotion and Reciprocal Protection; Agreement on Cooperation between the Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) ( May 2007);
