Infographics: Top 10 milestones in Viet Nam-United Nations relations and national progress

VGP - As a member of the United Nations, Viet Nam upholds the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and international law, particularly the principles of sovereignty equality of states, and settlement of international disputes by peaceful means.

Viet Nam officially became a member of the United Nations on September 20, 1977 and began to join the United Nations-led peacekeeping operation since June 2014.

The country seeks to build strong and diverse ties with countries around the world and to play an active role at multilateral fora, particularly the United Nations.

Viet Nam is a strong proponent of multilateralism globally, regionally, and inter-regionally. Today, the global challenges require global, effective and sustainable solutions to which multilateral cooperation can make immense contribution.

Viet Nam strongly supports the central role of the United Nations in maintaining international peace and security, furthering cooperation for development and coordination joint efforts to address global issues.

National progress

Viet Nam's economy continued expanding with the GDP growth rate of 7.08% last year, the highest rate since 2008 while the GDP per capita increased to US$2,385 in 2018 from over US$900 in 2007.

The country was home to 27,353 foreign-invested projects with total registered capital of US$340 billion by the end of 2018 and the disbursed volume of FDI was estimated at US$191.4 billion.

Foreign arrivals to Viet Nam soared to 15.5 million last year from 4.23 million in 2017, according to official statistics./.
