Norway fully supports Viet Nam's bid for WTO membership

Ha Noi (VNA) - Norway gives its full support for Viet Nam's bid for World Trade Organisation (WTO) membership, Norwegian Trade and Industry Minister Borge Brende told Viet Nam News Agency reporters before the start of seminars. The functions were held in Ha Noi on Tuesday, coinciding with the current visit to Viet Nam by Norwegian King Harald V and his wife, Queen Sonja.

The minister said as one of the first European countries to set up diplomatic ties with
Viet Nam in 1971, Norway has been providing the country with official development assistance (ODA) for many years in the sectors of oil and gas and hydroelectricity. He said Norway will help Viet Nam develop in a sustainable manner. "It is important that you register growth not only for a decade but for hundreds of years to come." He said Norway is also committed to helping Viet Nam take care of the nature.

Asked about the prospects for bilateral relations, he said, there will likely be an increase in investment from Norway and more bilateral cooperation, especially in the areas Norway is leading globally such as fisheries, oil and gas, hydroelectricity, shipping, commerce, IT and telecommunications.

Minister Brende said the presence of 130 Norwegian business people coming to Ha Noi on an entourage of the Norwegian Royalty and meeting with their Vietnamese partners showed how eager they are to invest in
Viet Nam. He attributed this to the outcome of the Vietnamese Government's renovation policy of opening up the market and inviting businesses to cooperate with Viet Nam. Another factor can be Viet Nam's impressive 7-percent economic growth, he said.

"Now is the time for Norwegian businesses to come to
Viet Nam, and I hope to see more investment from businesses, not just from the Government through ODA."
