President wants greater cooperation with Belgium

Ha Noi (VNA) - President Tran Duc Luong assured visiting Belgian Defence Minister Andre Flahaut in Ha Noi on Thursday of his desire to elevate Viet Nam's all-around ties with Belgium, including defence cooperation.

President Luong noted with pleasure that the two countries' relationship has grown year to year in every field, including the economy, trade, investment, science and technology, culture and education.

He highlighted endeavours by both countries to actively and effectively carry out cooperation programmes in the fields of the military medical service and defence industry, despite the fact that they have just established defence ties.

The President expressed his hope that the Belgian Government would continue to help Viet Nam surmount the after-math of war by granting aid to Agent Orange victims and assisting in mine and unexploded ordnance clearance.

Belgian Defence Minister Andre told the President that his visit is aimed at reviewing the results of the two countries' cooperation thus far and working out orientations to develop that cooperation in the future.

He noted that the two sides had similar views in assessing the two countries' current ties, and also expressed his hope for the expansion of bilateral  cooperation  in a wide range of areas, including defence, development, culture and economy.
