US-Viet Nam to jointly establish centres of excellence in Viet Nam

Washington( VNA) - A cooperation statement for establishing centres of excellence in Viet Nam was signed in Washington on Wednesday between the Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology, the US-based Science Initiative Group (SIG) and the Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF). Signatories were Bui Manh Hai, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology; Prof. Chung Uy Kim, President of the Republic of Korea Institute for Advanced Study and SIG representative; and Pham Kien, VEF Executive Director.

To set up these centres, the Ministry of Science and Technology will coordinate with other Vietnamese ministries to devise a plan on initiative centres to submit to the Prime Minister for approval and then send it to the World Bank to request funding. VEF and SIG will provide technical assistance for the endeavour.

Addressing the signing ceremony, Deputy Minister Hai  said these centres will help develop Viet Nam's human resources for the cause of national modernisation, while Prof. Kim said they would have a great significance in promoting scientific and technological development in Viet Nam.

VEF Executive Director Kien hoped these centres will attract Vietnamese talents, preventing the brain-drain. He also announced that with VEF fundings, 102 Vietnamese post-graduate students are studying in 37 universities in the US, adding that VEF plans to hold a meeting for these students in Washington before the end of this year to introduce them to the US scientific circles.
