Steering Board for Viet Nam-Laos border project set up

Ha Noi (VNA) - A steering board for a project to plant more border markers and upgrade the national border marker system between Viet Nam and Laos will be set up under Prime Minister Phan Van Khai's Jan. 24 decision.

The new board will include members of the Government Steering Board for the delineation and placement of land border markers between Viet Nam and China. The border provinces of Dien Bien, Son La, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam and Kon Tum each will have a member on the board.

The board is tasked with managing the building and implementation of the project to plant additional and upgrade existing national border markers along the Viet Nam-Laos borderline, handling important issues while carrying out the project, and providing guidelines for coordination with Laos to plant border markers under the project.

The board will also take charge of bilateral negotiations and the documentation of the legal and technical results of the project in order to supplement legal documents on border issues between Viet Nam and Laos.

The Prime Minister's decision took effect as of the signing date of Jan. 24.
