Viet Nam wants to share gender successes with other countries

New York (VNA) - Viet Nam wants to share with other countries its successful experiences in the advancement of women, said Vice-Chairwoman of the National Committee for Women's Advancement Dang Huynh Mai at the 49th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) on Mar. 2.

Mai, Vietnamese head delegate to the session, said the successes were the results of the effective implementation of State social policies, gender equality activities and Vietnamese women's efforts and strong will.

She pledged the Vietnamese Government and people's further efforts to ensure gender equality and the advancement of Vietnamese women. Viet Nam has successfully implemented the national strategy and plan of action for the advancement of women in 2000, and committed to promoting the implementation of its National Strategy by 2010, she said.

The role and status of the Vietnamese women have been significantly improved. Viet Nam ranked first in Asia in term of female representation in the National Assembly and its female literacy rate stands at 90.9 percent. Women's ownership rights have been strengthened and ensured by the laws, the Vietnamese representative said.

She highlighted the fact that the Viet Nam Women's Union with 12 million members nationwide is a socio-political organisation that supports and protects women's legal rights in all areas.

Mai said Viet Nam will strive to successfully carry out the national strategy for the advancement of women by 2010, complete laws and policies on gender equality, boost economic development so as to reduce poverty, ensure the effective realisation of gender policies and obtain the strategic objectives adopted at the 1995 Beijing Conference./.
