Viet Nam furthers int'l co-operation in fighting drugs and crime
Ha Noi (VNA) - Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem received Narumi Yamada, Chief Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Viet Nam, in Ha Noi on Mar. 3.
Deputy PM Khiem said that the Vietnamese Government highly appreciates the UNODC's co-operation with and assistance to Viet Nam in combating drugs and crime.
He also told his guest that the fight against drugs is considered a national programme in Viet Nam, adding drug fighting agencies have been set up in all localities and a legal foundation has been created for anti-drug operations.
However, at present, the country still has to learn to deal with cross-border drug trafficking and drug abuse among young people, students and pupils.
Narumi Yamada said that she highly respected the Vietnamese Government's determination to fight drugs, as well as its achievements in the programme to eliminate opium poppies in border areas.
She went on to say that in the future, the UNODC will boost its co-operation with Viet Nam in combating crime, including crimes relating to women and child trafficking, money laundering and trans-national crimes.
She added that the new projects which the UNODC will carry out in Viet Nam in the near future will focus on combating drug trafficking, addict detoxification, addiction relapse prevention and former drug addicts' community reintegration./.
