Viet Nam, RoK agree to end talks on Viet Nam's WTO membership

(VNA) - Viet Nam and the Republic of Korea (RoK) have agreed to put an end to their bilateral talks in May on Viet Nam's joining of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The agreement was made during Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien's visit to the RoK from May 2-5.

Minister Nguyen Dy Nien called on Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan, held talks with Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Ban Ki-moon and held working sessions with the Ministries of Commerce, Industry and Energy, and Informations and Communication. He also met with the President of the RoK-Viet Nam Friendship Association and representatives of a number of RoK economic groups.

Nien conveyed the best regards from Prime Minister Phan Van Khai to Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan, and said that the Vietnamese PM highly valued the results of PM Lee's recent Viet Nam visit.

The two sides discussed measures to further boost bilateral relations between the two foreign ministries, and exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual concern.

They noted with satisfaction the rapid development of the cooperative ties between Viet Nam and the RoK in the spirit of comprehensive partnership in the 21st century.

The two sides also discussed how to increase RoK's investment in Viet Nam and Viet Nam’s goods and rice exports to the RoK.

The RoK side committed to grant more scholarships to Vietnamese students, especially for those who are major in information technology, quickly complete a project to build an IT college in central Da Nang city and increase the number of Vietnamese workers in the RoK.

FM Nguyen Dy Nien said he supports the policy to turn the Korean Peninsula into a peaceful, stable region without nuclear weapons, and supports the reconciliation of the Koreas. He affirmed that all conflicts should be solved through peaceful negotiations.

FM Nguyen Dy Nien invited Minister Ban Ki-moon to pay an official visit to Viet Nam and the Minister accepted the invitation.
