Vietnamese, Singaporean diplomats work to boost bilateral ties
(VNA) - Officials of the Vietnamese and Singaporean foreign ministries have discussed specific measures to implement bilateral cooperation accords inked by the two countries' leaders during their annual political consultation session.
Among the accords were a joint statement on the two countries' all-faceted cooperation framework in the 21st century and an initiative to promote the two economies' linkage in services, investment, finance, information technology, transport and communications, and education and training.
During the consultation session, the third of its kind, held in Singapore on May 13-14, Permanent Deputy Foreign Minister Le Cong Phung and Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Ministry Peter Ho noted with pleasure the fruitful developments of the two countries' multi-dimensional ties in the recent past.
They affirmed their desires to further boost bilateral ties in the interests of the two peoples and for peace, stability, development and cooperation in the region.
On international and regional issues of mutual concern, they were of the view that members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) should work to strengthen intra-group cooperation, and increase cooperation with non-member partners.
They also emphasised that ASEAN member countries should firmly uphold the group's principles to ensure the interests and common goals of the association.
The session, which took place in an atmosphere of friendship and mutual understanding, concluded successfully with the participants agreeing to convene the fourth session in Ha Noi in 2006.
While in Singapore, Permanent Deputy Foreign Minister Le Cong Phung paid a courtesy visit to Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo.
