APEC trade ministers support Vietnam's WTO membership

(VNA): Trade ministers from the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation forum (APEC) member countries have declared their support for Vietnam's bid to join the World Trade Organisation.

At the Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) and the 11th meeting of APEC trade (MRT) held in Jeju Island from May 30 - June 3, all participants showed their co-operative spirits, saying they would conclude WTO negotiations with Vietnam in the coming months.

A Vietnamese delegation, led by Deputy Trade Minister Luong Van Tu, attended the meeting and discussed preparations for the organisation of the SOM, the Meeting of APEC ministers and the APEC Summit in Vietnam in 2006.

At this year's SOM, trade ministers approved six Vietnamese projects in commercial facilitation, quality standards, customs procedures, and small- and medium-sized enterprises.

Tu met with the Trade Minister of the Republic of Korea to complete bilateral WTO negotiations and with the Deputy Trade Minister of Japan to finish negotiations on industrial taxation on June 1.

The Vietnamese trade official also held bilateral meetings with other APEC trade ministers on the sidelines of the meeting with a view to enhancing bilateral trade co-operation and calling for support for Vietnam's effort to join the WTO.

The Vietnamese delegation also discussed co-operation in rice exports with Thailand and trade exchange and tourism co-operation with Chile.
