Viet Nam, US hold anti-drug training course

(VNA) - Vietnamese procurators, judges and investigators have discussed the war against drugs with US experts at a recent training course held under amemorandum of understanding on anti-narcotic cooperation between Viet Nam and the United States.

The eight-day course, which ended in Ha Noi on June 22, was designed to increase Vietnamese judicial officials' awareness and professional skills in combating and preventing drug trafficking.

The US experts also introduced the trainees to international, regional, and US laws concerning the matter, as well as the current situation in the global war against drugs.

Last year, Viet Nam's anti-drug agencies uncovered 12,000 drug-related crimes which involved 18,260 people. They seized 240 kg of heroin, nearly 59 kg of opium and more than 1,000 kg of marijuana. The people's procuracies at all levels prosecuted nearly 11,720 suspects in more than 9,000 drug cases of which the people's courts tried 8,600 cases and convicted 11,356 defendants.

The US government also helped Viet Nam organise three such training courses in 2004.
