Reception marks Viet Nam-New Zealand diplomatic ties
(VNA): Vietnamese Ambassador to New Zealand Tran Hai Hau hosted a reception on June 27 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Viet Nam-New Zealand diplomatic ties.
The Vietnamese diplomat reviewed milestones in the friendship and all-round cooperation between the two countries over the past 30 years.
He expressed the hope that the two countries' multi-faceted cooperation would increase, particularly in economics, trade, investment and education.
Hau thanked the New Zealand Government for its decision to increase ODA to Viet Nam in the years to come.
Addressing the function, New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Philip Goff spoke highly of the great achievements Viet Nam has obtained over the past 30 years.
He said he believed that by pursuing its renewal policy and with the Government's determination, Viet Nam will use all its potential to become one of the most dynamic and successful countries in Southeast Asia.
Goff noted that the two countries' cooperative ties have developed fruitfully and were marked by Prime Minister Helen Clark's visit to Viet Nam in 2003 and Prime Minister Phan Van Khai's recent visit to New Zealand.
He also affirmed that his country strongly supports Viet Nam's bid to join the World Trade Organisation and its candidacy for a seat at the United Nations Security Council for the 2008-09 term.
The Minister expressed his hope for closer coordination with Viet Nam in carrying out cooperation programmes with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
He pledged New Zealand's assistance to Viet Nam in the organisation of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Ha Noi in 2006.
