Viet Nam signs agreements with GMS countries

(VNA) - Viet Nam has signed several cooperation documents regarding transportation, power trade, animal disease control and the construction of an information super highway with member states of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).

The signing took place on July 5 during the Second GMS Summit, which opened in Kunming, the capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province.

Deputy Minister of Transport and Communication Pham The Minh signed three annexes of the GMS Cross-border Transport Agreement, which involve easily broken-down goods and passengers, and transportation conditions. He also inked a protocol for fees to be placed on transit transport.

Deputy Minister of Industry Do Huu Hao signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on guiding the implementation of an agreement on electricity sales and purchase; Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Bui Ba Bong signed an MoU on building a system for transboundary animal disease control in the GMS; and the Deputy Director of the Viet Nam Post and Telecommunications Corporation inked an MoU on boosting the construction of an information super highway among the GMS countries.

The GMS countries refer to Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam, which share the Lancang-Mekong River. The six countries established an economic cooperation mechanism in 1992 with assistance from the Asian Development Bank.
