FAO chief praises Viet Nam for hunger elimination efforts
(VNA) - Jacques Diouf, General Director of the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), has described Viet Nam as a model of development, especially in agricultural production.
Diouf also expressed his high expectation for Viet Nam's contributions to FAO programmes while receiving the Vietnamese Ambassador to Italy and permanent representative at the FAO, Nguyen Van Nam, who presented his credentials to the FAO chief, on July 12.
He said emerging as the world second largest rice exporter from a hunger-hit country, Viet Nam should contribute more to FAO-funded programmes, especially on South-South cooperation, by sharing experiences with other developing countries.
Viet Nam should contribute to the Millennium goals as well as targets set forth by the World Summit on Foods, said the FAO chief.
He also pledged the FAO's active support and close cooperation with Viet Nam to help fulfil its mission if it is elected as President of the FAO General Assembly in Rome in November. Viet Nam is a candidate for the post.
For his part, the Vietnamese Ambassador expressed thanks to the FAO and the General Director personally for their valuable assistance to the Vietnamese people and hoped that the assistance will continue in the years to come.
Nam also reaffirmed the Vietnamese Government's resolve to fulfil its commitments to the international community, with the top priority to be given to poverty reduction.
