Milestones in Viet Nam-China relationship
- November 1991: General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) Do Muoi and Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet visited China, marking the normalisation of bilateral relations and opening up a new page in bilateral relationship.
- February 1992: Chinese Foreign Minister Qian Qichen paid a visit to Viet Nam, during which the two countries signed agreements on economic and consular cooperation.
- November 1992: Chinese Premier Li Peng visited Viet Nam.
- November 1993: President Le Duc Anh paid a visit to China.
- February 1994: National Assembly Chairman Nong Duc Manh had a visit to China.
- November 1994: General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and President of China Jiang Zemin visited Viet Nam. On this occasion, the two countries signed an agreement on the establishment of a joint commission for economic and trade cooperation.
- November 1995: CPV General Secretary Do Muoi paid a visit to China.
- June 1996: Chinese Premier Li Peng visited Viet Nam to attend the eighth CPV National Congress.
- November 1996: Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) Qiao Shi paid a visit to Viet Nam.
- July 1997: During a visit to China, CPV General Secretary Do Muoi held talks with his Chinese couterpart Jiang Zemin. The two leaders agreed to conclude a bilateral land border treaty and an agreement on border demarcation in the Tonkin Gulf at the earliest dates possible.
- October 1998: Prime Minister Phan Van Khai visited China. The two countries reached a consular agreement, a judicial assistance agreement and a border trade agreement.
- February 1999: During a visit to China by CPV General Secretary Le Kha Phieu, leaders of the two countries defined cooperation guidelines of "friendly neighbourliness, comprehensive cooperation, long-lasting stability and looking toward the future".
- December 1999: Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji visited Viet Nam.
- December 30, 1999: Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan visited Viet Nam where he and his Vietnamese counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cam, signed a land boundary treaty on behalf of the two governments.
- December 2000: The two countries issued a joint statement on bilateral comprehensive cooperation in the 21st century at the end of the visit to China by President Tran Duc Luong.
- December 25, 2000: Viet Nam and China signed agreements on the delimitation of the Gulf of Tonkin and fisheries cooperation in the Gulf.
- April 18-23, 2001: Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao, also a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, led a CPC delegation to visit Viet Nam to attend the ninth CPV National Congress.
- September 7-10, 2001: Li Peng, a member of the Political Bureau's Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee and Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, paid a visit to Viet Nam.
- November 6, 2001: Prime Minister Phan Van Khai met Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji on the sidelines of the seventh summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Brunei.
- November 30-December 4, 2001: CPV General Secretary Nong Duc Manh visited China. The two sides issued a joint statement and signed a number of cooperation accords.
- February 27-March 1, 2002: General Secretary of the CPC and President of China Jiang Zemin visited Viet Nam. On this occasion, the two countries signed an agreement on economic and technical cooperation between the two governments and a framework agreement on China's provision of preferential loans to Viet Nam.
- April 7-11, 2003: CPV General Secretary Nong Duc Manh paid a visit to China. Leaders of the two countries reached a consensus on further boosting bilateral ties in the 21st century.
- June 13-15, 2003: Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing visited Viet Nam.
- September 2003: The two countries signed four government-level documents during the visit to China by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.
- October 2003: Prime Minister Phan Van Khai met with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, and CPC General Secretary and President Hu Jintao on the sidelines of an ASEAN Summit in Bali, Indonesia, and an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum Summit in Bangkok, Thailand, respectively.
- February 17, 2004: General Secretary of the CPV Nong Duc Manh received in Ha Noi a CPC delegation led by He Guoqiang, a Politburo member and Secretary of the CPC Central Committee's Secretariat, and Head of the CPC CC Organisation Department. The delegation was in Viet Nam for an official visit to attend a seminar on Party theory.
- April 30, 2004: Viet Nam inaugurated its Consulate General in Kunming, in the southern Yunnan province of China.
- May 2, 2004: Viet Nam officially opened its Consulate General in Nanning, the capital city of China's Guangxi autonomous region.
- May 4, 2004: a high-ranking Chinese delegation led by Li Tieying, Vice Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, visited Viet Nam to attend the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory.
- May 20-25, 2004: Prime Minister Phan Van Khai paid an official visit to China.
- June 21-25, 2004: Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien paid a visit to China and attended the third Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) Ministers Meeting in Qing Dao.
- October 6-7, 2004, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao paid a visit to Viet Nam, during which he held talks with Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and met with CPV General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, President Tran Duc Luong and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An.
