Preparation for the year of APEC-Viet Nam 2006
An international preparatory conference for the Year of APEC-Viet Nam 2006 will be organised in Ha Noi on July 21 and 22, with 150 participants from 21 member economies, the secretariat and related organisations of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum to attend.
The conference is one of many preparatory activities for the 14th APEC summit to be hosted by Viet Nam in November 2006.
At the conference, representatives will focus discussions on four main topics: APEC development, orientations, challenges and opportunities affecting the existence, role and development of APEC; immediate and strategic benefits of APEC; and the themes and priorities for the Year of APEC-Viet Nam 2006.
On the basis of summing up opinions of all members, the APEC Secretariat and organisations, a seminar is scheduled to be organised in Ha Noi in August. The seminar will work out themes and priorities for the Year of APEC-Viet Nam 2006, which should stand for Viet Nam's interests, while succeeding and inheriting previous APEC host countries.
Apart from the conference, Viet Nam will establish a National Committee for APEC 2006 under the Government and the APEC Research Centre of Viet Nam.
Founded in November 1989, APEC now has 21 member economies. Viet Nam joined APEC at the APEC Foreign-Economic Ministers Meeting in November 1998.
Over the past six years, the number of Viet Nam's cooperation projects within the frame work of APEC has been on the rise, focusing on new areas such as competitive policy, intellectual property, bio-technology, e-commerce and information technology. To date, Viet Nam has implemented 11 projects within the APEC cooperation programme, with a total investment capital of 6 million USD.
