Officials fight to prevent wildlife trade across Viet Nam-China border
(VNA) - Each year, between 2,000-3,000 tonnes of wild animals were traded through the Viet Nam-China border during the past three years, according to the office of the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
The traded wild animals include mainly langurs, turtles, birds, snakes, and pangolins. Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City, and northern Quang Ninh, Lang Son and Lao Cai provinces are main entrepots for wildlife trading.
To assist legal trade and prevent illegal trade of wild animals, CITES and the Trade Records Analysis of Flora and Fauna in Commerce (TRAFFIC) have required tight cooperation between Vietnamese and Chinese authorities in accordance to the two countries' laws and CITES regulations.
The CITES office in Viet Nam has been coordinating with agencies in charge of market and border management in localities bordering on China to strengthen international cooperation in preventing illegal trade, as well as in exchanging updated information in the field.
