Viet Nam, Myanmar hold first political consultation meeting
(VNA): The foreign ministries of Viet Nam and Myanmar held their first political consultation meeting in Yangon on August 1-2 to discuss detailed measures to accelerate the implementation of agreements the two countries' leaders made during Myanmar Prime Minister Soe Win's visit to Viet Nam in April this year.
Officials from the foreign ministries and representatives from key ministries and economic branches of the two countries also looked into how to speed up the implementation of agreements reached at the fifth session of the Viet Nam-Mynmar joint committee.
They agreed to ask the two governments to increase the number of visits by delegations from different levels of all sectors to enhance mutual understanding and trust, and to boost the cooperation between ministries and economic branches. The Myanmar side affirmed they would take concrete measures to boost two-way trade, adding that they want Vietnamese businesses to invest in aquaculture and processing, power and medicine production in Myanmar. Myanmar also hopes to boost bilateral cooperation in transport, tourism, culture, education and sports.
The officials also exchanged views on a number of regional issues of mutual concern.
Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Cong Phung, who led the Vietnamese delegation at the meeting, paid a courtersy visit to Prime Minister Soe Win. He was also received by Myanmar Foreign Minister U Nyan Win, Minister for Commerce Tin Naing Thein, and Minister for Energy Lun Thi.
The Myanmar Prime Minister and Ministers underscored the fine traditional friendship between Myanmar and Viet Nam, and affirmed Myanmar's wish to promote bilateral cooperation, especially in the economy. They appreciated the results of the first politicial consultation meeting between the two foreign ministries, and said the meeting contributed to the development of bilateral relations for the interests of the two countries' people as well as for regional peace, stability and development and the solidarity of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The second political consultative meeting is scheduled to take place in Viet Nam next year.
