(VNA) - The 2005 "Viet Nam - ASEAN Friendship and Cooperation Week" will be organised in Ho Chi Minh City from August 14-28 with various cultural, sports and economic activities.

The "Friendship Football Cup" will be the first among activities held during the week and will take place at Thong Nhat Stadium on August 14 and 28. Football teams from foreign diplomatic offices, economic organisations and business associations in the city will participate, including teams from the US Consulate General, Olympic de Saigon, Saigon Saint and the HCM City Union of Friendship Organisations (HUFO).

Major activities of the "Viet Nam - ASEAN Friendship and Cooperation Week" will be held at the city's Youth Culture Palace from August 21-28. These include a photo exhibition displaying images about the land and people of the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as about the friendship and cooperation between Viet Nam and ASEAN.

An art performance will be held at the municipal theatre on August 28, with songs, dances and a show of national costumes, which will be performed by amateur artists from consulates general and diplomatic offices of ASEAN member countries and China, Japan, India and the Republic of Korea.

Moreover, a seminar on economic cooperation for businesses from Southeast Asian countries will be held on August 26.

The HUFO said the week marks not only the 10th anniversary of Viet Nam joining ASEAN (August 28) and the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the municipal Viet Nam-Southeast Asia Friendship Association, but also the 60th anniversaries of the August Revolution and Viet Nam's National Day.

The event also aims to promote mutual understanding between Viet Nam and other ASEAN member countries, as well as contribute to the socio-economic development in the country in general and in HCM City in particular.
