Vietnamese-Indonesian Foreign Ministries pledge to boost coordination

(VNA) - The Foreign Ministries of Viet Nam and Indonesia have pledged to closely coordinate with each other on both a bilateral and multi-lateral basis to contribute to strengthening peace, security, stability and cooperation in the region.

During their first consultative meeting in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on Aug. 13-14, delegations from the two foreign ministries expressed satisfaction at the development of bilateral friendship and cooperation, especially the results of the visit to Viet Nam by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang. They discussed the establishment of a ministerial-level consultative mechanism for strategic issues as agreed upon by President Susilo Bambang and his Vietnamese counterpart Tran Duc Luong.

The two sides also agreed to accelerate discussions for the signing of a Plan of Action as early as possible to implement the Viet Nam-Indonesia Declaration on the Framework of Friendly and Comprehensive Partnership Entering the 21st Century and other agreements reached by leaders of the two countries. They looked into activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties in December.

The two sides agreed to work to promote trade and investment between the two countries. They said they hope the joint committee will hold its fourth meeting in Viet Nam as early as possible, and relevant agencies of the countries will soon establish a joint coffee trade committee.

Regarding regional and international issues of mutual concerns, the two sides shared the view that there have been rapid and complicated developments in the situation in Southeast Asia, but the prevailing trend is still peace, friendship, cooperation and development, as seen through the recent 38th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM-38) and other conferences in Vientiane, Laos. They agreed that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) continues to maintain its solidarity and play a leading role in preserving peace and stability in the region as well as in regional cooperation mechanisms.

The Indonesian side affirmed its support for Viet Nam in organising the 2006 Summit of the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and joining the World Trade Organisation. The two sides also affirmed their mutual support for each other's candidacy for non-permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council. Indonesia is running for the 2007-08 term, and Viet Nam, the 2008-09 term.
