Viet Nam stresses parliament's role in promoting democracy

(VNA) - The Vietnamese National Assembly delegation stressed the important role of parliament in promoting democracy at the general session of the second World Conference of Inter-Parliamentary Union in New York on Sept. 8.

Under the session's topic of "Parliament and democracy promotion", the delegation said a parliament embodies democracy through its functions of representing the people, building laws and supervising law executive bodies.

As representatives of the people, parliaments should create mechanisms and channels for people to contribute to their country's important decisions. As legislative organs, democracy is reflected through the feasibility of legal documents approved by the National Assembly.

The delegation stressed that in Viet Nam, all important laws that have great influence on people's lives, such as the Civil Law or the Anti-corruption Law, will be made public for discussion before they are approved by the National Assembly.

The Vietnamese delegates also made clear that Viet Nam considers the supervising function of a parliament plays an essential role in democracy promotion, so cabinet questioning at NA sessions always attracts great public attention. In addition, the Vietnamese NA has regular supervision programmes for important issues and key national projects.

The Vietnamese delegation said the country is willing to share experiences with other countries in order to realise its strategy of development for a rich people, strong country, and an equal, democratic and civilised society.
