Viet Nam aims for 1 billion USD in trade with India in 2006

(VNA) - Viet Nam considers India a major market and will strive to bring two-way trade to 1 billion USD by 2006, said an official of the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI).

At the meeting, held in Ha Noi on Sept. 27, between Vietnamese and Indian businesses, Nguyen Ngoc Thang, Vice Director of VCCI's Foreign Relations Department, said Viet Nam currently exports tea, herbs, cooking oil, cotton, and wood products to India and buys machinery, medicines, computer parts, chemicals, steel and fertilisers therefrom. However, Viet Nam has always suffered from a trade deficit with the country.

The meeting, co-sponsored by the VCCI and APITCO, an organisation involved in supporting medium and small-sized enterprises of India, was attended by 16 Indian businesses and about 50 Vietnamese companies.

APITCO representative, I.D. Prasad said the Indian businesses came to this meeting to seek opportunities in pharmaceuticals, rubber processing, telecommunications, information technology, construction, aquatic product processing and real estate.

Viet Nam and India enjoy a time-honoured relationship. The two countries reached a joint plan of action to boost economic, trade and investment cooperation for 2004-2006 during the Indian Foreign Minister's visit to Viet Nam in October last year./.
