Viet Nam - Cuba inter-governmental committee meets
The Vietnamese delegation was led by Nguyen Hong Quan, Minister of Construction and President of the Viet Nam-Cuba subcommittee; and the Cuban delegation was led by Marta Lomas Morales, Minister of Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation and President of the Cuba-Viet Nam subcommittee. The two sides informed each other of the socio-economic development in their respecting countries.
Minister Marta Lomas Morales said Cuba obtained a GDP growth rate of 7.3 percent in the first half of this year, and expected to increase the rate to 9 percent this year. He reviewed the two countries' cooperation since the 22nd session of the committee, underlining Viet Nam's supply of rice to Cuba, the project on promoting the household rice farming model in Cuba's eastern provinces, and the project to build a biotechnology centre in Ho Chi Minh City.
The minister praised the cooperation and trade between Cuban and Vietnamese businesses through trade fairs. He said he hoped the two countries will promote economic and commercial cooperation, boosting traditional friendly relations.
Minister Nguyen Hong Quang expressed his pleasure to witness Cuba's great achievements in building socialism and the national construction under the leadership of the Cuban Communist Party and President Fidel Castro. He highly appreciated the results of the two sides' cooperation projects. The minister affirmed that Viet Nam will continue to provide rice for Cuba under agreements reached at this session and proposed to expand scientific and technical cooperation projects, and organise celebrations of the 45th anniversary of the two countries' diplomatic relations.
The two sides agreed to convene the 24th session in Ha Noi in the 3rd quarter of 2006.
At the meeting, Vietnamese and Cuban specialists reported on initial outcomes of the project on the household rice farming model in Cuban localities.
