Central economic zone lures over 3 billion USD

(VNA) - The Dung Quat economic zone in central Quang Ngai province has attracted investment worth 3.23 billion USD, according to the Dung Quat Economic Zone Management Board.

Since the beginning of this year, the board has granted licences to an additional 15 projects capitalised at 901 billion VND (roughly 57 million USD), bringing the total number of licensed projects in the zone to 63.

The new projects include a 184 billion VND synthetic yarn factory, a 143 billion VND forestry for-export processing factory, a 62 billion VND leather and shoes factory, and a 56 billion VND pre-concrete fabric factory.

According the management board, 29 other project owners have registered to invest in the zone with a total investment of 17,361 billion VND (roughly 1.12 billion USD).

Tran Le Trung, head of the Dung Quat Economic Zone Management Board, said the zone plans to license 10 additional projects with a total investment of almost 1,600 billion VND (100 million USD) in the remaining months of the year. The board will also consider withdrawing five licences of owners who failed to implement projects as scheduled, Trung added.

In the first nine months of this year, businesses in Dung Quat economic zone obtained an industrial production and service value of nearly 170 billion VND (10.5 million USD) and an export value of 9.4 million USD while generating new jobs for more than 1,100 local labourers.
