Int'l community lauds Viet Nam's anti-bird flu efforts, commits more help
The two officials was speaking at the closing session of a two-day health conference in Ottawa on Oct. 25 that drew of Health Ministers from around the world to discuss preparations against a bird flu pandemic.
The Canadian Health Minister said his country will help Viet Nam and other Asian nations increase their capacity in preventing and controlling newly emerging diseases through a project worth 15 million Canadian dollars.
Vietnamese representative to the conference, Associate Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tran Hien, Director of the Central Hygiene and Epidemiology Institute, shared with other participants experiences in combating avian influenza and put forth measures to intensify the surveillance of poultry. He also called for further international cooperation to deal with the pandemic.
At a time when many Asian, American and European countries are worried about the threat of bird flu, and the possibility that the virus might mutate into a form that enables it to pass from human to human, the meeting was seen as an important step toward global cooperation.
The participants discussed and adopted a joint communique, which defines priority policy solutions to prevent an outbreak of the disease, stressing the need to intensify cooperation in promptly detecting the disease among poultry and humans.
Particularly, participants pointed to the need to strengthen cooperation between laboratories worldwide in order to produce and distribute bird flu vaccines and medicine. They agreed to boost technology transfer and design a mechanism ensuring the smooth distribution of the required vaccines and medicine all over the world./.
