Health Ministry advises people to say "no" to flu-infected fowl

(VNA) - The Ministry of Health has recommended people not to slaughter and eat fowl infected with avian influenza, and to comply hygienic and environmental regulations so as not be infected with the lethal H5N1 virus.

According to Ph. D Trinh Quan Huan, Deputy Minister of Health, virus H5N1 that causes type A of avian flu can survive in the natural environment for months. Therefore, people living in bird flu stricken area can get the pandemic from infected poultry easily.

The official, also deputy head of the National Steering Board for Controlling and Preventing Avian Flu in Humans and Poultry, said an outbreak of avian flu in poultry occurred in Viet Nam in the middle of last month. The same time also saw the return of the pandemic in humans, which was successfully contained in the country last July.

Of the total 92 bird flu-infected cases detected so far in Viet Nam, 42 people have died of the disease, Huan said, adding that about 90 percent of the patients have had direct contacts with infected poultry.

The official also urged people with symptoms of possibly having contracted to the pandemic to go to clinics for testing. Fowl raisers were advised to regularly disinfect their farms and rearing areas./.
