Seminar on strengthening inter-continental coordination in fighting HIV/AIDS

(VNA) - A seminar on HIV/AIDS control and prevention within the framework of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) is being held in Ho Chi Minh City to discuss methods for the pandemic prevention.

The seminar, organised jointly by Viet Nam, Sweden, the Netherlands and the Philippines, aims to realise ASEM State leaders' commitment and raise effectiveness of HIV/AIDS prevention work in the two continents.

Over 100 participants from 20 ASEM member countries, the European Commission, international organisations and media agencies, touched upon the launching of a national publicity for HIV/AIDS control programmes, care for people infected with HIV/AIDS and mobilisation of HIV/AIDS patients to take part in prevention work.

At the same time, the participants pointed to the need to increase the role of ASEM member countries in carrying out their common principle in the fight against the pandemic. Under the principle, each member country is required to work out a national action plan/strategy; have a national coordinating agency; and set up a national surveillance and appraisal system.

The seminar will draft a proposal for ASEM cooperation activities in HIV/AIDS control for submission to the 6th ASEM summit scheduled for 2006 in Finland.

At the 5th ASEM Summit in Ha Noi, Viet Nam, in October 2004, State leaders expressed their concern about the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic on socio-economic development of countries. The leaders reaffirmed their unanimity on the Declaration on the Joint Commitment approved at a special meeting of the UN General Assembly on HIV/AIDS, unanimously agreed to include the HIV/AIDS prevention activities in the ASEM cooperation framework, and approved the initiative to jointly organise a seminar on HIV/AIDS control by the four countries - Sweden, the Netherlands, the Philippines and Viet Nam./.
