Nigeria to facilitate ties between Viet Nam and Africa

(VNA) - Viet Nam hopes that Nigeria will become a bridge linking the country to Africa, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan has said.

The Deputy PM was speaking during a meeting in Ha Noi on Nov. 24 with Nigeria's Foreign Affairs Ministry Secretary Alhaji Achituwo Abubakar Tanko, who is making an official visit to Viet Nam.

Viet Nam has a traditional relationship with Africa, including Nigeria, and acknowledged the country's importance as Africa's most populous nation with great potential, the Deputy PM said.

The people of Viet Nam and Nigeria had supported each other's struggle for independence and now need to further reinforce their solidarity and co-operation to defeat poverty.

Viet Nam highly appreciated Nigeria's role in the African Union, the Deputy PM said.

In reply, his Nigerian guest spoke about results of his talks with Viet Nam's Foreign Ministry.

They had agreed about various issues and expected to further promote bilateral co-operation as well as co-operation within the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement.

But they had also acknowledged that Viet Nam-Nigeria cooperation did not live up to match their rich potential.

It had been suggested that the countries enhance cooperation through an exchange of their strengths, such as rice and oil production.

Exchanges between enterprises of the two countries should also be encouraged, the Nigerian visitor told Deputy PM Khoan.

This would help increase co-operation and investment between enterprises and improve the modest export turnover between them.

Earlier, Foreign Affairs Minister Nguyen Dy Nien held talks with Alhaji Achituwo Abubakar Tanko.

The foreign minister hailed the visit and said the economic, trade, cultural, scientific and technological co-operation convention signed by Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Le Van Bang and the Nigerian visitor was a concrete step to implement the high-ranking agreement that was pledged when Nigerian President Obasanjo Olusegun visited Viet Nam in April.-Enditem
