Viet Nam launches website on bird flu

(VNA) - The Ministry of Post and Telematics officially launched a website on bird flu on Nov. 30 which will provide up-to-date information on the on-going epidemic in Viet Nam as well as relevant guidelines of the Government and relevant ministries and agencies.

The web page's address is http://www.cumgiacam.gov.vn.

At present, bird flu has spread to 199 communes of 72 districts and towns of 17 provinces and cities nationwide. Since Oct. 1, the total number of birds culled has reached 1.74 million. In the last two months, Viet Nam had two more patients infected with flu virus type A H5N1 and one of whom has died. As many as 93 people have been infected since the initial identification of the virus, of them 42 dead.

Although this was the third consecutive year the epidemic ravaged Viet Nam, many people are not yet equipped with basic and essential knowledge of the disease. This resulted in an unawareness of the prevention measures that may lead to a widespread infection, or in other cases to excessive carefulness so that all poultry products have been boycotted, causing an unnecessary "freeze" in sales.

Minister of Post and Telematics Do Trung Ta said his ministry will provide conference information to serve the fight against bird flu epidemic and flu pandemic among humans. A video conferencing system will be set up at the Government Office to conduct video conferences with localities nationwide./.
