Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum opens in Indonesia

(VNA) - The 14th annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Parliamantary Forum (APPF-14) kicked off in Jakarta, Indonesia on Jan. 16, with the participation of more than 400 delegates from 22 APPF members and observers.

Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman and President of the APPF-13 Nguyen Van An attended the event and delivered a speech.

The agenda of the APPF-14 will focus on issues of politics, security, environment, legislation, and social order, and cultural, commercial and economic cooperation, in a bid to further promote the activities of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, thus contributing to maintaining peace, stability, development, and prosperity in the region.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Vietnamese NA Chairman An reviewed major events in the areas of security, politics and economics in 2005, saying that peace and development still prevail in international relations.

"It is obvious that given rapid globalisation, a variety of new issues have emerged that call for a higher level of engagement of parliaments in international relations, and closer cooperation between parliaments and governments in finding out solutions to common issues facing mankind," affirmed Chairman An.

He added that "As the host country in 2005, Viet Nam, with support and cooperation from the parliaments of member countries, tried its best to make the APPF-13 Meeting successful. This year, Viet Nam will host the 14th APEC Summit in Ha Noi with the theme Towards A Dynamic Community for Sustainable Development and Prosperity. We strongly believe that the APEC Summit this time will adopt appropriate directions and measures to further promote APEC cooperation and keep it on the right track, making important contributions to peace and development in the region and the world. With that in mind, we hope that the 14th APPF's conclusions and resolutions to be adopted in Jakarta will be circulated among all member countries, serving as a reference for the formation of the agenda of the 14th APEC Summit."

After the opening session, the APPF-14 will hold symposiums, discuss issues and adopt resolutions and a joint statement./.
