Seven meetings kick off first APEC Senior Officials' Meeting

(VNA) - The first seven meetings by working groups and subcommittees of the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum opened in Ha Noi on Feb. 20 as preparations for the first APEC Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM I).

The meetings included those convened by the Investment Experts' Group (IEG), the Electronic Commerce Steering Group, the Subcommittee on Customs Procedures (SCCP), the Joint Advisory Committee for Electrical and Electronic Mutual Recognition (JAC EEMRA), the Life Sciences Innovation Forum (LSIF), the APEC Symposium on Information Privacy Protection in E-Government and E-Commerce and the Preparatory Meeting of the Intellectual Property Rights Experts' Group, said Director Pham Sanh Chau of the Information Sector under the APEC Secretariat.

Chau added that so far, more than 1,100 delegates from 21 APEC member economies have registered to join the SOM I that is slated to commence in Ha Noi on March 2, among them 84 from the United States and 80 from Japan.

Discussions in SOM I will primarily concentrate on how to implement the APEC 2006 theme "Toward a dynamic community for sustainable development and prosperity" and other issues put forth by Viet Nam, the host country of this year's event.

Established in Canberra, Australia, in 1989, APEC is currently comprised of 21 member economies. Viet Nam won APEC official membership on Nov. 14, 1998./.
