Congress elects Party Central Committee
Earlier, the Congress approved a list of nominees for election to the Party Central Committee as well as the membership of the Congress's vote counting committee.
Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, a member of the Politburo, chaired the morning session.
Politburo member Tran Dinh Hoan said, after two days of discussions with delegations, a consensus was reached on the Party Central Committee's report calling for reasonable consideration be given to regional origin, gender, ethnicity and age in electing the Central Committee.
Delegates approved a list of 207 candidates, 174 of whom were nominated by the 9th Central Committee and 31 of whom were nominated by delegates at the Congress to fill the official seats on the new committee.
Two other candidates were self-nominated. They are Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Phu Binh and Prof Nguyen Xuan Han, a lecturer at the Natural Sciences University.
They also approved another list of 46 candidates, 30 of whom were nominated by the 9th Central Committee and 16 of whom were nominated by delegates at the Congress to fill the alternate seats.
Results of the election will be announced on April 24./.
