Search continues for Typhoon Chanchu victims

(VNA) - The latest count showed that as at the morning of May 21 Typhoon Chanchu claimed 26 Vietnamese lives, left 181 people and eight ships missing and sunk eight fishing boats, according to the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control.

The central city of Da Nang suffered the largest death toll and damage. Twenty-two fishermen have died and six ships have sunk, while four more ships are still listed as missing. 

Four fishermen from the nearby Quang Ngai province have died and two ships have sunk, while 17 more people and three ships have been counted as missing.

The central Quang Nam province has 18 people and one ship on the missing list.

As of May 21, as many as 330 Vietnamese fishermen on board of 15 fishing vessels have been saved by Chinese rescue ships.

Reports from the Vietnamese National Committee for Search and Rescue showed that three fishing ships returning to Da Nang City carrying surviving fishermen and the bodies of death victims have been provided with food and fuel by Chinese rescuers./.
