APEC Working Groups conclude first day of discussion

Experts' Groups meeting in Ho Chi Minh City in the framework of the second Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Senior Officials Meetings (SOM II) on May 22 concluded their first day of discussion.

At the meeting of the Investment Experts' Group (IEG), representatives discussed results of the implementation of activities and initiatives put forward at the first APEC Senior Officials Meetings (SOM I) in Ha Noi in February 2006.

They were updated with the results of the group's projects, including a workshop on sharing experience on attracting investment from multi-national corporations held in Ho Chi Minh City on May 19-20, and the sixth edition of the APEC Investment Guide Handbook.

The representatives also listened to reports on issues relating to investment in Regional Trade Agreements and Free Trade Agreements (RTAs/FTAs).

The IEG Meeting will last until May 23.

At the meeting of the APEC Human Resource Development (HDR) Working Group, participants reviewed activities of the APEC Education Network (EDNET) and discussed the APEC Strategic Action Plan for English and Other Languages.

Delegations shared experiences on a teaching method in Japan, Thailand and the Republic of Korea in such areas as mathematics and natural sciences, as well as the application of information technology in schools.

The HRD Working Group will hold a plenary meeting on May 23.

The Informal Experts' Group on Business Mobility (IEGBM) debated on reports on electronic passport technology and other related technologies.

The application of these technologies will remarkably cut business peoples' timing and travel expenditures when travelling in the APEC Region. The IEGBM will meet until May 24.

At the APEC Life Science Innovation Forum (LSIF), participants listened to reports reviewing projects put forward in the third LSIF meeting, including the project on harmonization of regulations for pharmaceutical products and prevention of counterfeit drugs and medical equipment. They also discussed plans to hold the fourth LSIF meeting on the sideline of SOM III in September.(VNA)
