UN Chief calls Viet Nam a true development success story
The visiting UN Chief applauded Viet Nam in a banquet hosted by Vietnamese State President Tran Duc Luong in the evening of May 24.
The UN Chief spoke highly of Viet Nam's socio-economic achievements, especially over its 20 years of renovation.
"The credit for these remarkable achievements must go, first, to the Vietnamese people, whose resilience and hard work has created this vibrant and thriving economy," he said.
"Indeed, there is much that the world can learn from Viet Nam's experience. Divided by conflict, you know the true value of peace. Having helped so many rise from poverty, you appreciate the power of prosperity. And having engaged in constructive détente with your neighbours, you understand the virtues of multilateralism and cooperation", he said.
President Luong said in his speech that "Viet Nam believes that enhancing the central role of the United Nations in addressing international issues is vital to the world community, especially given the current international situation."
"Therefore, Viet Nam supports the efforts undertaken by UN members and the Secretary-General to reform the organisation in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter and in the interest of the international community," Luong stressed.
"For its part, Viet Nam will continue to contribute to UN activities in order to realize the noble goals of this global organisation," he affirmed. (VNA)
