Viet Nam supports NAM's increased role
The affirmation was made when the minister and the Vietnamese delegation took part in the NAM Foreign Ministers' Meeting and an extraordinary ministerial meeting of the G-77 (a group of developing countries) and China held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on May 29-30.
The Vietnamese official also presented specific recommendations on the NAM's operation, including on how to coordinate to promote reforms in the United Nations, implement the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and reinforce South-South cooperation.
At the events, the Vietnamese diplomat introduced policies on socio-economic development and foreign affairs that were outlined at the recent 10th Congress of the Viet Nam Communist Party.
On the sidelines of these meetings, Minister Nien held bilateral meetings with the heads of the Cuba, India, South Africa, Belarus, Nigeria, Mauritius, and Ecuador delegations, discussing ways to develop bilateral ties and on issues of mutual concern.
Bringing together delegates of 114 NAM member countries and representatives from observing countries and UN agencies, these meetings took place with the aim of assessing developments in international life and NAM's activities under Malaysia's chair.
Participants made preparations for the 14th NAM Summit that is scheduled for September in Cuba and discussed unanimity in viewpoints on pressing international issues, including UN reforms.
The meetings adopted a NAM final document themed "Advancing a more dynamic and closer NAM: challenges in the 21st century" and a Statement of the G-77 and China on promoting the UN's synchronisation, reforming the Secretariat and its management methods.
On this occasion, the NAM admitted two new members, namely Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica, bringing its membership to 116./.
