ACMECS meeting opens in Laos
The ACMECS meeting will review cooperation within the ACMECS framework since the second ACMECS Summit in Thailand last November and discuss directions for cooperation through ACMECS in the future.
During the two-day meeting, foreign ministers are expected to adopt the ACMECS Action Programme for 2006 and the list of ACMECS projects, including 55 common projects and 241 bilateral projects. They will submit the list and action programme to leaders of ACMECS countries for aprroval at the mid-term ACMECS Summit, which will take place during the 12th ASEAN Summit in late 2006.
The participants agreed that the next ACMECS meeting will be held in Myanmar in 2007 on the eve of the 3rd ACMECS Summit in Viet Nam.
The meeting between ACMECS and its development partners will focus on cooperation between the two sides, and the modes and mechanisms of participation of development partners in ACMECS projects. On this occasion, ACMECS member countries called upon development partners to assist ACMECS' prioritised projects, including four projects initiated by Viet Nam.
During the meeting, the Head of the Vietnamese delegation, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Cong Phung, held bilateral meetings with the heads of delegations from Laos and Japan to discuss issues relating to the ACMECS meeting and bilateral relations.(VNA)
