Ukraine backs Viet Nam's bid for UN Security Council seat

The Ukrainian government has decided to support Viet Nam's candidancy for a seat on the UN Security Council for the 2008-09 term.

The decision was conveyed by the Deputy Foreign Minister Iury Kostenko of the Ukraine to Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem during their meeting in Ha Noi on August 30.

This was welcomed by Deputy PM Khiem, who also placed great value on the recent inauguration of an honourary Consulate of the Ukraine in Ho Chi Minh City as a milestone in the relationship between the two countries.

Khiem also expressed his wish for further development in the two countries' bilateral economic and commercial ties, which he said had not yet reached their full potentials.

Viet Nam was also seeking closer cooperation with the Ukraine in international forums, the Deputy Prime Minister said.

For his part, Seputy Foreign Minister Kostenko said that he expected the two countries to boost their cooperation within the framework of a number of international forums.

He described the Vietnamese community in the Ukraine and the large number of Vietnamese graduates from Ukrainian univerisities as a bridge to boost relations between the two countries.

During the Ukrainian diplomat's three-day visit from August 28, an agreement was signed between Ho Chi Minh City and Khakov, home to the largest Vietnamese community in the Ukraine.

On August 29, Kostenko held talks with the Vietnamese Permanent Deputy Foreign Minister Le Cong Phung to promote relations between the two foreign ministries on a regular basis.

High on the agenda of their meeting were measures to boost relations between the two countries in all fields, including political, economic, commercial, cultural, scientific, educational, sports and tourism.

Viet Nam is one of the Asian-Pacific countries that the Ukraine has always accorded high priority in its foreign policy, said the Ukrainian deputy foreign minister.

During his visit, Kostenko also met Deputy National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van Yeu and attended the inauguration of the Honourary Consulate of the Ukraine in HCM City.(VNA)
