Tanzanian PM calls for investment from Viet Nam
PM Lowassa spoke at the Viet Nam-Tanzania Economic Forum in Ha Noi on Sept. 6 before leaving for Ho Chi Minh City, continuing his four-day official visit to Viet Nam.
The Tanzanian PM said the two countries should increase their cooperation in agriculture and irrigation works, and that Tanzania could learn from Viet Nam's experiences in the preservation of water resources, farming, farm produce processing. Tanzanian businesses should also look for investment opportunities in fisheries and garments and textiles, PM Lowassa added.
According to the Trade Ministry, two-way trade turnover between Viet Nam and Tanzania reached 27 million USD in 2005. Viet Nam earned 22.4 million USD from exports to Tanzania, with rice contributing 22 million USD. Meanwhile, Viet Nam's imports from Tanzania were valued at 4.7 million USD, including 4.1 million USD for cotton.
Deputy Trade Minister Tran Duc Minh attributed the modest trade turnover between the two countries to geographical distance and insufficient information about enterprises in each country. Many products from Viet Nam were exported to Tanzania through an intermediary.
In order to facilitate business operations, minutes on cooperation in investment and trade promotion between enterprises of the two countries were signed at the forum by the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Viet Nam and Tanzania./.
