NA chief leaves Ha Noi for AIPO meeting in Philippines

(VNA)- National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong has left Ha Noi for the 27th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organisation (AIPO), which will sit from Sept. 10-15.

The Vietnamese delegation brings to the meeting an initiative to improve AIPO's role in settling regional issues and increase mutual assistance between AIPO and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The proposal is expected to facilitate cooperation and strengthen solidarity among ASEAN member countries and boost relations with dialouge partner nations, according to sources within the delegation.

Viet Nam was officially admitted to the AIPO at the 16th General Assembly held in Singapore on Sept. 18, 1995. Then it has been actively engaged in AIPO programmes and meetings.

Viet Nam has also successfully hosted a number of symposiums which have been held between AIPO general assemblies.

In 1998, when ASEAN member economies were facing a struggle to overcome a regional financial and monetary crisis, the Vietnamese National Assembly proposed an initiative at a local workshop on the part legislatures could play in settling the crisis, which received strong support.

Viet Nam held the first conference of the AIPO committee on research into drug addiction which sounded a warning to ASEAN group's Governments as well as those outside the group.

Important contributions were made by Viet Nam to AIPO in acting as AIPO rotary chairman during the 2001-02 term and succesfully hosting the 23rd General Assembly in September, 2002.

By hosting a number of major AIPO events, including the third Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership Meeting (ASEP) in March, 2004 and the 13th Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF) in January, 2005, the Vietnamese National Assembly has not only managed to increase its prestige in inter-parliamentary functions but also to enhance the Government's capacity in fulfilling its regional and international commitments./.
