Thai Ambassador highlights Viet Nam's fight against hunger

Viet Nam is one of the countries leading the world in poverty reduction, said Thailand's Ambassador Kittipong Na Ranong.

The ambassador made the remark at a conference on sustainable alternative development, held in Ha Noi on Sept. 21.

The conference was jointly organised by the Thai Embassy, the Mae Fah Luang Foundation and the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on the 60th anniversary of the rule of King Brumibol Adulyadej co-inciding with the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Viet Nam-Thailand diplomatic ties.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hua Duc Nhi agreed with the diplomat's remarks, adding that the Vietnamese government has given priority to the causes of hunger alleviation and poverty reduction, considering them to be a major target for national development.

Successful measures against hunger eradication and poverty reduction had been one of the government's greatest achievements in Viet Nam over 20 years of renewal process and this had been recognised by the world.

Viet Nam still needed assistance from regional countries as well as international friends to make these achievements permanent at a time when Viet Nam is to join the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the deputy minister added.

Representatives from Thailand shared their experiences in the implementation of the Doi Tung development project. The project had helped eradicate poppy fields, and improve the living conditions of people in Doi Tung, and make Doi Tung a more attractive tourist site.(VNA)
