Party leader requires improved diplomatic activities

The Party leader, on Nov. 25, described the diplomatic sector as a bridge linking Viet Nam with other nations and stressed the need for it to help familiarise foreign businesses with the nation's investment environment.

General Secretary Nong Duc Manh made the statement during the 25th conference of the diplomatic sector which opened in Ha Noi on Nov. 25 to discuss how to improve the efficiency of diplomatic activities.

Foreign relations activities must be efficiently conducted "to help foreigners get a thorough understanding of the Party's and the State's policies and guidelines, as well as of the Vietnamese land and people. The diplomatic sector must assist foreign investors and facilitate their operations in Viet Nam," the General Secretary said.

He further said that overseas diplomatic agencies are required to understand local countries and act as a bridge between Viet Nam and those countries. They are also required to provide the government and relevant agencies with recommendations to work out suitable policies with these countries.

The Party chief also asked the foreign relations sector to combine its operations with activities in other areas such as socio-economy, security-defence, scientific research-technology, culture and information and make best use of the strength of the overseas Vietnamese community.

The diplomatic sector is required to make more efforts in the future to help promote peace and contribute to the universal drive for peace, national independence, and social democracy and advance, Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem said while making his opening speech.

During the seven-day conference, participants, including more than 400 heads of diplomatic agencies and overseas bureaus, will discuss regional and international issues and forecast development trend in the next 10-15 years.

They will also review the implementation of foreign relations activities serving economic operations since the 24th conference in August 2003 and propose specific measures to create breakthroughs in diplomatic work.
