Viet Nam praises UNDP's contributions to poverty reduction

Cooperation and assistance from UNDP and other UN organisations have effectively contributed to the Vietnamese Government's endeavour to reduce poverty and improve its people's lives, said President Nguyen Minh Triet.

President Triet made the appraisal while receiving visiting Kemal Dervis, UNDP Administrator and Chair of the UN Development Group (UNDG), in Ha Noi on Dec. 8.

The President thanked the UN for putting Viet Nam in the list of pilot countries applying UN renewal activities in national development. He stated that Viet Nam always supports the development of the roles of multilateral institutions in international relations, especially the role of the UN, welcoming reforms in the UN in general and the UN system in Viet Nam in particular.

President Triet expressed his wish that the UN Administrator and other UN experts share with Viet Nam more experiences in making socio-economic development strategies.

The UN Administrator said Viet Nam could be an example for developing country to follow. He thanked the Vietnamese Government for its strong commitments and support to the UN plan of reform, especially the reform in the UN Security Council. Viet Nam was leading in carrying out cooperation models in the UN.

Dervis expressed his hope that Viet Nam would become non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and continue making contributions to the UN.

Host and guest exchanged views on opportunities and challenges of Viet Nam as the country becomes a WTO member, the fields that UNDP and other UN agencies could extend help to reach its socio-economic development goals.

The same day, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Van Bang also received the UN official, expressing thanks to the UN's effective assistance to Viet Nam's national construction and socio-economic development over the past 30 years.

He asked the UN to continue with its help for Viet Nam in the coming years, especially solving challenges in five to 10 coming years.

Bang said that Viet Nam committed to supporting and actively taking part in the initiative to build "one UN" in Viet Nam and asked the UN to help train officials to facilitate Viet Nam's participation in UN activities.

Dervis said that Viet Nam should pay attention to making policies on finance, economic restructure, and equitisation.

The UN Administrator further said that the UN would provide more consultancy on making development policies to Viet Nam. (VNA)
