IAEA General Director visits Viet Nam to boost ties

General Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohamed El Baradei and his entourage paid a visit to Viet Nam from Dec. 9-11, which aimed at strengthening cooperation ties between Viet Nam and the IAEA.

During his visit, the General Director met leaders from the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Public Health, and the Viet Nam Nuclear Energy Agency.

The Vietnamese agencies spoke highly of the IAEA and ElBaradei's personal cooperation and support in applying nuclear technology and energy in a wide range of areas in Viet Nam.

They also welcomed the IAEA's plan to help Viet Nam do research and develop atomic power and to promote a programme that uses nuclear technology to prevent and treat cancer.

From his side, General Director ElBaradei highly appreciated the cooperation between Viet Nam and IAEA during the past few years.

He said he welcomed the decision of the Vietnamese government to sign the IAEA's Additional Protocol of the Safeguards Agreements and said he would support Viet Nam in this issue.

The General Director also appreciated the Vietnamese government's ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban-Treaty.
