Viet Nam supports reform of UN Security Council
Speaking at a UN General Assembly session in New York on Dec. 11, Trung highlighted the important role of the UN Security Council in resolving disputes in the world, affirming that at the same time the Security Council should make greater efforts to carry out its tasks at a time when international peace and stability are under threat at various areas on the globe.
The Vietnamese diplomat noted the positive reforms the council has made to increase its effectiveness and transparency, including promoting relations with non-member countries, organising more open meetings, and strengthening coordination between the council's president, the president of the UN General Assembly and the president of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The Vietnamese representative , however, expressed his hope that the Security Council would continue its efforts for comprehensive reform, renewing its working style to ensure democracy and transparency so that all UN member countries can easily supervise its work.
Regarding the reform of the council's organisation, Trung said that Viet Nam shared the view with other UN member countries that discussion should continue to reach a solution acceptable by the majority of members. "Viet Nam believed that UN member countries should work harder to overcome disagreements to obtain this target," the Vietnamese representative stressed.
